Diving in Komodo aboard Antares, June 2013 - Plongée à Komodo à bord d'Antares, Juin 2013

English : Manta is a special specy of Rays, it refers to the biggest rays. Manta comes from the Spanish language and means blanket, due to mantas shape, we guess. Mantas are afraid of humans, this is why it is not so common to be able to swim with some of them.

This big pelagic also called “demon of the sea” is usually blue, dark or grey on the back side and white on the stomach side with dark point that let us know them.  We can suppose that the manta has such a nickname because of its size. Indeed, it is a peaceful and harmless animal. Many pilot fish stay close to their belly, and eat what the manta has not eaten yet. To avoid them, manta has to jump out of the water.
Indonesia is the biggest Manta sanctuary in the world !
